Choosing Figs | Neurotic as Hell | A Travel, Lifestyle, and Life List Blog

Pretty blue lights along the way help you right on by…

1. Whose bright idea was it for me to take the train home after work and immediately turn around and drive back to the city?

2. I finally made it to the Chicago Outdoor Film Festival for the last movie of the year: Sound of Music with JoeW and Meredith (by “with” I mean I saw it with them, not that they were starring in the film).

3. Meredith makes good curry chicken salad. JoeW is a dork.

4. There is no better setting for a movie that in front of the Chicago Skyline (minus the drunk idiots).

5. I got lost ON LAKE SHORE DRIVE. How in the hell is that possible? The entrance to 55 just disappeared. I swear.

6. If you exit LSD in Hyde Park you are taken immediately into an apartment complex parking lot. I swear that too.

7. There’s a road I’d like to tell you about, lives in my home town
Lake Shore Drive the road is called and it’ll take you up or down
From rags on up to riches fifteen minutes you can fly
Pretty blue lights along the way, help you right on by
And the blue lights shining with a heavenly grace, help you right on by
And there ain’t no road just like it
Anywhere I found
Running south on Lake Shore Drive heading into town
Just slippin’ on by on LSD, Friday night trouble bound

Hi, I'm Val. I spent most of my 20s in a standstill, unable to pick which path in life I wanted to take. I wanted the nomadic life of a traveler but also wanted the husband, the condo, and the kitten. Unable to decide which life I wanted more, I did nothing. When I turned 30 I’d had enough of putting my life on hold and decided to start “choosing my figs.” So, I quit my job, bought a one-way ticket to Europe, and traveled for three years. Now I'm back in Chicago, decorating my apartment in all the teal, petting my cats, and planning my next adventure.

The Sound of Music, along with science fiction, I feel is directly responsible for my warped view on relationships. When Liesel and Rolf dance in the gazebo and sing “Sixteen going on Seventeen” my mom looked at her 5 year old son and said “That’s how you’ll know when you’re in love, when you can do sponataneous choreography with your sweetheart.”
    Soooo not kidding.
