Taking a tuk tuk in Bangkok, Thailand.

We got low.

Meeting an old friend in Bangkok, Thailand.

I took a quick weekend detour from Chiang Mai back to Bangkok to meet up with Jodie — an Australian girl I had met four years ago in Amsterdam and hadn’t seen since.

I had been looking forward to catching up with her in Australia, but then my plans changed and I ended up staying in Asia. And then we had planned to meet up in Laos months ago but plans changed again. So when she told me she’d be back in Bangkok for a couple of days before heading on to work on a volunteer project in Cambodia I decided to hop on the first bus.

Jodie is now the fourth person from that trip I’ve met up with since and the third on this trip (I met up again with her sister Megan in Koh Samui, Jackie in Manila, and, previously, Will in Virginia.)

It was amazing to see my pole-dancing birthday twin again! We did some shopping, some drinking, some eating, some sitting by a pool and foot massages.

Meeting new people, amazing people, from all over the world is one of my favorite parts of travel. I’m always lucky when I can meet them again. Hopefully this won’t be the last time I see Jodie — looking forward to eventually catching up in Melbourne!

Hi, I'm Val. I spent most of my 20s in a standstill, unable to pick which path in life I wanted to take. I wanted the nomadic life of a traveler but also wanted the husband, the condo, and the kitten. Unable to decide which life I wanted more, I did nothing. When I turned 30 I’d had enough of putting my life on hold and decided to start “choosing my figs.” So, I quit my job, bought a one-way ticket to Europe, and traveled for three years. Now I'm back in Chicago, decorating my apartment in all the teal, petting my cats, and planning my next adventure.
