Vertigo rooftop bar in Bangkok, Thailand

Vertigo.

I sometimes forget that there’s an alternate world out there. One where I can spend a night in a dress, sipping expensive cocktails at a rooftop bar that doesn’t allow you to wear shorts and that has an amazing view instead of my usual outings of chugging Changs or Singhas in a backpacker bar.

Of course, I was wearing the same dress I wear everywhere anyways because I only have about three wearable outfits. And my canvas shoes were falling apart but the only nice ones I had got wet and wouldn’t dry and grew mold and so I had to throw them out.

But it’s the thought.

I don’t go to nice places often anymore. But sometimes it’s nice to say fuck it and splurge.

To have some good conversation with some other bloggers, Raymond and Sebastian, who both also happened to also be in Bangkok.

To splurge on actual cocktails that didn’t contain m1-50 or come in a bucket.

To have waiters who were attentive enough to notice that you were only polishing off the pumpkin chips and so they brought you a tray with extra.

Of course, then we went to a 7-11 and got some Changs and hung out on Sebastian’s rooftop until they were nearly gone.

Of course, then we went back to Khoa San Road, sang to the music, drank from a tower.

Hey, some things just work.

Hi, I'm Val. I spent most of my 20s in a standstill, unable to pick which path in life I wanted to take. I wanted the nomadic life of a traveler but also wanted the husband, the condo, and the kitten. Unable to decide which life I wanted more, I did nothing. When I turned 30 I’d had enough of putting my life on hold and decided to start “choosing my figs.” So, I quit my job, bought a one-way ticket to Europe, and traveled for three years. Now I'm back in Chicago, decorating my apartment in all the teal, petting my cats, and planning my next adventure.

For the record dear readers of Val’s blog, I did not punch her. At least I don’t recall that part. Or the beer tower for that matter. Oh dear.

    🙂
