Other travelers kept telling me that when I came home from my ’round the world trip I “wouldn’t relate to my friends anymore.” In response I would just laugh at them and say, “I think I’m going to relate to them more…I can drink beer now.”

I’m not going to lie: I drank a lot of beer on my trip. Because it was often the cheapest choice. While I’m still not sure I love beer, I can tolerate it it now. And I drink it pretty much constantly. Well, except when I’m working. Or sleeping. Or drinking coffee.

This weekend Nadia organized an outing to Naperville to check out Solemn Oath, a small brewery that’s so tucked away we drove into two wrong parking lots before finally finding it. Nadia had been curious why they didn’t have a tour, until we got there and realized “oh, there it is, tour over.” The place was tiny. But the beer was delicious, especially the Anaphylaxis, which was described on the chalkboard as being “carrot cake spiced.” And you all know that carrot cake is one of my favorite things ever. Well, at least you all know that now.

Hi, I'm Val. I spent most of my 20s in a standstill, unable to pick which path in life I wanted to take. I wanted the nomadic life of a traveler but also wanted the husband, the condo, and the kitten. Unable to decide which life I wanted more, I did nothing. When I turned 30 I’d had enough of putting my life on hold and decided to start “choosing my figs.” So, I quit my job, bought a one-way ticket to Europe, and traveled for three years. Now I'm back in Chicago, decorating my apartment in all the teal, petting my cats, and planning my next adventure.
