Stuffed pizza at Papa Del's pizza

Pizza Party at at Papa Del’s Pizza in Champaign.

While I was back in Champaign, Illinois, for the KCSA (Krannert Center Student Association) Reunion, my friends and I, of course, spent some time visiting old haunts from our college days. There was an afternoon drinking beers at Murphy’s. There was a late-night dinner at The Courier Cafe. And there was a pizza party lunch at Papa Del’s Pizza on Neil Street.

Papa Del’s is a Champaign institution. The restaurant serves the most authentic Chicago-style deep dish and stuffed pizza on the Chambana University of Illinois campus. Students and alumni flock there for slices of the savory pie. Obviously we were no different.

My friends and I gathered together on Saturday morning at a large table at Papa Del’s Champaign. We split some baskets of cheesy breadsticks and garlic cheese bread to start and then gorged ourselves on thick slices of deep dish pizza stuffed with tangy tomato sauce, spicy hunks of Italian sausage, and gooey melted cheese.

The pizza was stuffed. We were stuffed. And we definitely left feeling both nostalgic and satisfied.

Hi, I'm Val. I spent most of my 20s in a standstill, unable to pick which path in life I wanted to take. I wanted the nomadic life of a traveler but also wanted the husband, the condo, and the kitten. Unable to decide which life I wanted more, I did nothing. When I turned 30 I’d had enough of putting my life on hold and decided to start “choosing my figs.” So, I quit my job, bought a one-way ticket to Europe, and traveled for three years. Now I'm back in Chicago, decorating my apartment in all the teal, petting my cats, and planning my next adventure.
