Mount Rushmore in Keystone, South Dakota. Labor Day Chicago to Mount Rushmore Road Trip.

A missing face on Mount Rushmore.

I have this photo. It’s a picture of Mount Rushmore with a face missing that my grandparents took a very long time ago. The monument was still under construction and Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, was still yet to be carved into the mountain. It’s my favorite photograph that I own.

I’d never seen Mount Rushmore myself, in person, so, as I happened to have a four-day weekend off over Labor Day I decided that it was the perfect time to pack up black pickle and head on over on a road trip to South Dakota. Em and I took off on Friday morning and by Saturday afternoon we were standing in front of the carved Black-Hills Mountain and four complete presidential faces.

While there we also went to see Crazy Horse Memorial, which is another nearby monument carved into the side of a mountain. It’s been in the works for 50 years and still has 50 years to go. Who knows, maybe some day my grandkids (more likely grand nieces and nephews) will find this photo and be inspired to take off on a road trip of their own.

Our Mount Rushmore road trip was totally mousehousecheesehaus (read: awesome) and full of fun roadside attractions, monuments, and plenty of blonde moments from me…

Recap of the full road trip to come…as soon, of course, as I go through all my photos…

Hi, I'm Val. I spent most of my 20s in a standstill, unable to pick which path in life I wanted to take. I wanted the nomadic life of a traveler but also wanted the husband, the condo, and the kitten. Unable to decide which life I wanted more, I did nothing. When I turned 30 I’d had enough of putting my life on hold and decided to start “choosing my figs.” So, I quit my job, bought a one-way ticket to Europe, and traveled for three years. Now I'm back in Chicago, decorating my apartment in all the teal, petting my cats, and planning my next adventure.
