Dancing with Ladyboys in Koh Samui, Thailand

Meeting old friends and dancing with ladyboys in Koh Samui, Thailand.

When people ask me why I love to travel one of my first answers is always the people. I love to travel for the people I meet. In these last few years some of the most amazing people I’ve met I’ve met while traveling. Whether it was Sadie and Jamie and Carrie who I met at an eating contest. Whether it was Will or Jason who I met in Europe. Whether it was my Vietnam crew who morphed into my Laos crew. Whether it was Jaime and Ali and Andrew and Corey who turned from online friends to real life friends.

And it’s always great to be able to see them again.

So when Megan, a girl I met at an Amsterdam bar crawl four years ago, mentioned that she was also in Thailand, I left Bangkok to meet up with her in Koh Samui.

We managed to meet for dinner and then went out to for a ladyboy drag show the next night (where I was totally brought up on stage by ladyboy Shakira to dance: highlight of my life).

And while we didn’t get to spend a lot of time together before she had to leave it was great to catch up.

The rest of my time in Koh Samui, I spent doing a whole lot of nothing: swimming, getting a massage, watching movies in my room, reading a book in the sand. Relaxing. Catching up.

Hi, I'm Val. I spent most of my 20s in a standstill, unable to pick which path in life I wanted to take. I wanted the nomadic life of a traveler but also wanted the husband, the condo, and the kitten. Unable to decide which life I wanted more, I did nothing. When I turned 30 I’d had enough of putting my life on hold and decided to start “choosing my figs.” So, I quit my job, bought a one-way ticket to Europe, and traveled for three years. Now I'm back in Chicago, decorating my apartment in all the teal, petting my cats, and planning my next adventure.
