A night out at Balay Tubay in El Nido, Philippines.

It’s somewhere between a compliment and I’m trying to kiss you.

I still wasn’t sure I really wanted to leave El Nido. All that day I was considering moving my flight to Bangkok back up, giving up on the Philippines, a country I was loving until the night before. But there were still things I wanted to do there. But I felt lost and all my friends had already left or were planning on leaving. So I felt that I’d just be lonely there anyways.

I really had no idea what to do.

And then we decided to go out, get drunk, drink away the sorrow, have one last kick off.

And so there were rhum-laced shakes and Red Horses and rhum and cokes. And we went to at Balay Tubay and we watched a band, and danced with Filipinos who kept taking their photos with us. And I met Juan, from Madrid, and Mani, from Iceland, (seriously, I freaked out because I had never met anyone from Iceland before). And we danced together all night. And we went to a club full of prostitutes. And we drank beers on the beach.

And I ended up staying four more nights…

Hi, I'm Val. I spent most of my 20s in a standstill, unable to pick which path in life I wanted to take. I wanted the nomadic life of a traveler but also wanted the husband, the condo, and the kitten. Unable to decide which life I wanted more, I did nothing. When I turned 30 I’d had enough of putting my life on hold and decided to start “choosing my figs.” So, I quit my job, bought a one-way ticket to Europe, and traveled for three years. Now I'm back in Chicago, decorating my apartment in all the teal, petting my cats, and planning my next adventure.
