El Nido, Philippines

El Nido, Philippines.

El Nido is the base for exploring the islands of Palawan in the Philippines. After spending my first couple of nights in Palawan in Puerto (and taking a Puerto Princesa Underground River Tour) I headed to El Nido to spend a few days relaxing beach side.

The beach there is nothing exciting, the town has no ATM, and all the power is turned off between 6am and 2pm.

But it was a nice little place to relax by day and drink by night between island hopping adventures. I ended up doing three different tours in El Nido: Island Hopping Tour A, Island Hopping Tour C, and an overnight beach camping trip to Seven Commandos Beach.

And it provided some of the best and some of the worst nights of my trip so far.

I survived the giant earthquake that rocked the east coast (we didn’t feel it), I survived torrential rain and tsunami warnings, I survived getting robbed*, I survived dealing with a doorknob from hell that had to be replaced twice on me, I survived a terrible cough and fever on my last two days that prevented me from going too far with a cute boy from Iceland, and I survived saying goodbye to some amazing new friends…

*more on those later…

Hi, I'm Val. I spent most of my 20s in a standstill, unable to pick which path in life I wanted to take. I wanted the nomadic life of a traveler but also wanted the husband, the condo, and the kitten. Unable to decide which life I wanted more, I did nothing. When I turned 30 I’d had enough of putting my life on hold and decided to start “choosing my figs.” So, I quit my job, bought a one-way ticket to Europe, and traveled for three years. Now I'm back in Chicago, decorating my apartment in all the teal, petting my cats, and planning my next adventure.
