Damn you Antigone.
AjaxAntigone at State Theatre
I don’t remember what that line was from. I know it was from theatre camp. Yes, I did go to theatre camp for two summers in high school. But I don’t remember the context of that quote.
Anyways.
Last Thursday night Chelsa and I went to see AjaxAntigone at State Theatre. It was one of those nights that came into place primarily because I am a web editor/obsessed social networker/email marketer. As if those types of nights ever exist. But it started with an email from House Theatre. And at the bottom of that email it said to be the first to email back and win tickets to this show. So I looked at the clock and saw that it had been received over half an hour ago, so while I thought surely someone had beat me to it I decided to reply. An low and behold I ended up being the first and scoring two free tickets!
I was really excited for the show because they were bucking the normal theatrical traditions and embracing new media. For the opening night performance not only was it allowed but encouraged to tweet/Facebook/take photos/text message/anything else.
It was an interesting experience. I tweeted throughout much of the show and took photos. In all honesty it was way more distracting for me to be texting myself than for anyone else to be doing it. Except for maybe the guy two seats over who brought is SLR camera because the shutter made a lot of noise.
The play itself was really good, the acting was great, and I especially loved the use of light on a sparse set. They did well with a very limited budget.
In terms of social media I think the company could have handled it a little better. If you’re doing any event where patrons are encouraged to tweet you should give them your twitter handle and create a hashtag to categorize them. Without that it’s just a bunch of tweets that get lost in the universe.
It was an interesting experiment and I am glad I got to go.
Oh, and they gave out free Chipotle chips and guac afterwards. And wine. But I had lost my ID (found it later) so I didn’t get any 🙁
