Fourth of July hot dog eating contest at Coney Island
July 10, 2009
in competitive eating, Fourth of July, holiday, New York, North America, United States

No better way to spend July Fourth.

Saturday was the Fourth of July! For some that means fireworks. For others that means barbecues. For others that means marching in a band and joining the parade! But for me, the Fourth of July only means one thing: The Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating...

Heather says it means I’m going to die.

After the elephant eating contest on July 3 I met up with Jamie and Sadie and Carrie who run a site called HungrySisters and are also competitive eating fans. We went to Nathan's for lunch and then I watched as they rode the Cyclone. I...

I Think the Pacaderms Cheated

I woke up, in New York City, way too early on Friday and didn't want to get out of my amazingly comfortable hotel bed. But I had an eating contest to attend! So it was off to my first of two mornings at Coney Island!...

I tend to do more than most ever will…

So I spent three more days in Seattle with Scotty. On the first day I visited his school and walked around the campus while he worked in the morning. We met for yummy Thai food for lunch and then I was left on my own...

Next time!

After visiting Hyder, Alaska, it took another day and a half to get back to Seattle. Another twenty something hours of driving. Luckily the views are gorgeous and Canada is more insane about their roadside culture than America is! And luckily Brian managed to crack us...

Things to do in Hyder, Alaska.

After a long road trip through British Columbia, we made it to our final destination: Hyder, Alaska. Hyder, "the friendliest ghost town in Alaska," is about a 20 hour drive from Seattle and is the only town in Alaska that's accessible by road from British Columbia....

The long road to Hyder, Alaska.

Our road trip from Seattle to Hyder, Alaska lasted three days. It was about 20 hours of driving. Each way. Which was a long journey to get to a town that, basically, held nothing. But it was definitely worth it. There really is nothing to...

I almost wish it rained more.

I arrived in Seattle on a Wednesday morning and took a way too expensive cab to the hotel because I was way too tired to try to figure out the bus system. But I got to my hotel and since Brian wasn't getting in until...

Vacation Day 10: A Day in New York City

This morning I woke up way too early in a cushy bed in NYC. I didn't want to leave! But alas I had big things ahead, and by big I mean the size of an elephant! I hopped on a subway to Coney Island for...

Hi, I’m Val. I spent most of my 20s in a standstill, unable to pick which path in life I wanted to take. I wanted the nomadic life of a traveler but also wanted the husband, the condo, and the teal couch. Unable to decide which life I wanted more, I did nothing. I lived my life in limbo. When I turned 30 I’d had enough of putting my life on hold and decided to start “choosing my figs.” So, I quit my job and bought a one-way ticket to Europe. After 3 years on the road I’m back in Chicago, exploring the city, learning guitar, decorating my apartment in too much teal, cuddling my cats, and planning my next adventures.
