I sometimes forget that there's an alternate world out there. One where I can spend a night in a dress, sipping expensive cocktails at a rooftop bar that doesn't allow you to wear shorts and that has an amazing view instead of my usual outings of chugging Changs or Singhas in a backpacker bar. Of course, I was wearing the same dress I wear everywhere anyways because I only have about three wearable outfits. And my canvas shoes were falling apart but the only nice ones I had got wet and wouldn't dry and grew mold and so I had to...

Khao San Road is stretch in Bangkok where backpackers seem to conglomerate. Before coming I had this image in my head of it being some seedy street, dark and dangerous, a 24-hour party. In reality, it was mostly just restaurants and stores that all seemed to close down around 3:30am. I arrived on the street for the first time after taking a tuktuk back from the Grand Palace, where we took a quick walk through on the way back to our hostel....

I used to love going to Illini hockey games and had season tickets in Block I for football games back in college. And I watch the Super Bowl every year…if only for the commercials and taco dip....

My entire trip around Asia has been designed to get me to Bangkok right at this moment. It was part of the reason I decided to switch my initial flight in from Bangkok to Singapore. It was part of the reason I decided against getting a longer visa my first time in Thailand. Way back in September I was checking the day's competitive eating news from my apartment in Barcelona when I saw this on Eatfeats: there was going to be an eating contest. In Bangkok. In February. And that fell right dab in the middle of when I was planning...

After a night train from Chiang Mai I settled into my Bangkok hostel in Siam Square. The area was more geared towards shopping malls than anything else. But there would be a big eating contest in the area a few days later and so I figured it might be good to stay close to there for a bit. ...
