Every Fourth of July the best eaters in the world congregate at Coney Island and go head to head in the world's greatest hot dog eating contest. Half of those eaters are women. You might not know that from the media coverage of the contest. After all, the men's eating contest gets broadcast on ESPN while the women's is only ever available online. The women's contest is lucky to get a thirty second spot on the televised broadcast. And Joey Chestnut and Matt Stonie, ranked the number one and two eaters in the world, dominate the press, become trending topics on Facebook,...

Joey Chestnut and Matt Stonie took their prime spots at the center of the table and, from the moment the clock started ticking down, they were both fully focused on the win. For the first few HDBs they were neck and neck but, by two minutes in, Joey Chestnut had eaten to a steady lead. As the minutes ticked down and more hot dogs were eaten it was no longer a question of who would win, it was a question of whether the record would or would not be broken....

One of my favorite things about traveling is getting to learn about different cultures and share in traditions from around the world. Most times those customs are from wherever it is I happen to be. But, sometimes, since I meet people from all over too, I get to share in something from somewhere I've never been. I was in Cali for Rosh Hashanah — the Jewish new year. A few Israelis were staying at our hostel and they decided that they would cook dinner for all of us to celebrate. They joked that since none of them were particularly religious they'd...

I had a tough decision to make this Thanksgiving. I'm really the only one in the family who cooks. Or at least who cooks extravagantly. Last year I made the entire Thanksgiving dinner from scratch. And, for very many reasons, it was the hardest thing I've ever done. I wasn't really in the mood to do that again this year. We tossed around a few ideas. We debated just going out to eat. Which I was really tempted to do. But, since I probably won't be there next Thanksgiving, and maybe the one after, I kind of wanted a meal at...

1. I made myself a heart-shaped burger for Valentine's Day. I don't need a man to make heart-shaped meat product for me. But it would be nice.   2. On Valentine's Day morning Chelsa and I grabbed brunch at Blue Bayou where I had a crawfish omelet and we split some beignets. Then we met Joe and Alina and Cornie and some others to see Casablanca at Music Box. Can you believe I've never seen it before? It was really good but it kind of took me too out of it that I kept thinking "Oh, that's where that line is from!" and...

I kind of think I hate New Years. And last night kind of solidified my hatred. For once I was actually really excited about my New Years plans. I was going to be around single people. I was going to get all dressed up. I was going to go out and have fun. But instead I spent it alone on my couch eating ice cream sandwiches and watching the ball drop on TV. My back still hurts. A lot. I mean I can still walk but standing for any length of time and walking take its toll on it. I can't...
