Last week, to celebrate the Chinese New Year, I met up with some friends for a Lao Sze Chuan hot pot dinner in Chicago Chinatown. Chinese New Year, AKA Spring Festival, is a holiday that celebrates the turn of the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. It's traditionally celebrated in February, about a month after New Year New Year. The hot pot, which I've never done before, involved cooking meats in boiling liquids (we did one side mild and the other hot and spicy), which was delicious and weird, and terribly messy...

Chicago was hit by a big blizzard yesterday and it continued throughout today. I left work early yesterday and today my office was closed so I spent the day bundled in a bathrobe on my couch. I listened to thunder and lightning, I watched someone circle the block on a snowmobile, I watched as hardly any cars went by and when those who did spin out. I watched people shovel out there cars and shovel and give up on trying to use the sidewalks. There were more footprints in the road than tire tracks. Here is the snowstorm from the...

I was supposed to be going to TubaChristmas Chicago, an annual concert of Christmas music played on tubas, today. But my throat has hurt for a couple of days and although it feels much better today I do not feel like going out this afternoon. However, I just realized that last year's TubaChristmas is still on my list of things I never blogged about, so today I'll share some photos from last year's brass spectacular. If you're not feeling ill, you should definitely go. It's one of the fun things to do in Chicago at Christmas and a good thing to...

This is the pizza I got with Chelsa this week at Piece Brewery and Pizzeria. It was a white pizza with spinach and red onions and bacon. It was delicious. So was my Festivus beer....

1. Some random food I made over a month ago and never posted. They all contain eggs: Croissantwich with egg and cheese. Frittata with potatoes, mushrooms, onion, and goat cheese. Mushroom onion scramble. AKA a mix of a bunch of leftovers. 2. One day I was walking along and the More Cupcake truck happened to be parked and they were giving away free cupcakes. Mmm, red velvet! 3. Joe and Meredith are leaving for Pittsburgh soon! :-( They had a going away party. 4. Let's see if I can remember all the times I hung out with Mat...

It's that time of year again: pumpkins get carved, costumes get flaunted, ghost stories get told, candy gets handed out, and I lock myself in a movie theater for twenty-four hours subjecting myself to the horrors of the horror film. For the third year in a row I headed out to the Music Box Theater for their annual Music Box Massacre movie marathon: twenty-four hours of horror films, one after another from noon on Saturday to noon on Sunday. We got to the theater to stand in line at about 9:30am — two and a half hours before the movie mayhem was...

I've been trying to get to more good restaurants this year. Luckily Joe and Meredith have spearheaded a movement to get together once a month at a place we've all wanted to try. Unluckily they will soon be moving to Pittsburgh so this newly found tradition will probably be short lived. Last weekend though was our second installment at one of the current "it" places of Chicago: Girl & The Goat, a semi-casual West Loop restaurant opened by Top Chef winner Stephanie Izard. The restaurant has a goat theme with goats on the walls, the staff t-shirts, the menus and even...
