Brookfield, Illinois

There is something to be said for growing up in a town that doesn’t even have a McDonalds. A town that has a roundabout and a zoo and a restaurant with a cow on its roof. There is something to be said about being so close to a city, yet so far away.

That is Brookfield, Illinois.

This is Brookfield, Illinois, where I grew up…minus the Brookfield Zoo.

Two stories about this photo shoot.

one) I went skating around Brookfield to take the pics and while I was putting on the skates an old woman walked by in her walker. She looked at me and said “I’ve never seen anything like that! Are your wheels all in a row?” She had never seen a rollerblade before. She waited until I finished putting them on and took off so she could see them working.

two) At one point I got a rock jammed in the skate and I stopped dead on and tottled around for a long while. I managed to somehow stand up and make it to a place to sit down without falling. All the while I pondered what did I value more: my life or my camera…I probably would have chosen to save the camera.

Hi, I'm Val. I spent most of my 20s in a standstill, unable to pick which path in life I wanted to take. I wanted the nomadic life of a traveler but also wanted the husband, the condo, and the kitten. Unable to decide which life I wanted more, I did nothing. When I turned 30 I’d had enough of putting my life on hold and decided to start “choosing my figs.” So, I quit my job, bought a one-way ticket to Europe, and traveled for three years. Now I'm back in Chicago, decorating my apartment in all the teal, petting my cats, and planning my next adventure.
