Hotel bathroom in Paris, France.

Bonjour, Paris!

Paris wasn't in the plan but Paris is always in the plan.

Paris wasn’t in the plan. But I guess there’s something about this place that a girl just can’t resist.

I’ve made it no secret that this whole trip has been hard on me. I’m just not getting in the swing of things. And after four weeks of being kept awake in hostel beds with a scroungy little pillow and taking quick showers standing on dirty floors I needed a bit of a break.

And when I decided to go to Paris and started looking at hostels they were all so depressingly awful or too party-centered big.

So I decided to splurge on a hotel room for five nights.

With a big bed.

With lots of pillows.

With a TV (though all the stations are in French except CNN and CNN has been mighty depressing).

And a bathtub.

And real towels.

And air conditioning.

So I figured the sites could wait…and here’s how I spent my first night in Paris…

And I swear I’ve never felt so clean.

Hi, I'm Val. I spent most of my 20s in a standstill, unable to pick which path in life I wanted to take. I wanted the nomadic life of a traveler but also wanted the husband, the condo, and the kitten. Unable to decide which life I wanted more, I did nothing. When I turned 30 I’d had enough of putting my life on hold and decided to start “choosing my figs.” So, I quit my job, bought a one-way ticket to Europe, and traveled for three years. Now I'm back in Chicago, decorating my apartment in all the teal, petting my cats, and planning my next adventure.

I wonder if this ratio of hostel/hotel days will be repeatable as your trip goes on
