Baking a Buche de Noel for Christmas.

Baking my Buche (de Noel)

1. Buche de Noel

Unlike a certain Mr. Tyler Florence on a certain episode of Iron Chef America, MY Buche de Noel turned out swimmingly. My buche (a traditional French “yule log” cake) actually turned out really well and, I say, redeemed me from last week’s baking disaster. I slaved away on this puppy (please note, the cake contains no fluffy animals) all day, and really was afraid that it would completely fall apart. I also had no faith in the meringue mushrooms but the way they came together was uber-awesome. I am very proud of my yule log. Check it out:

2. Christmas Presents

Between one tissue paper, two wrapping papers, two bows, four tags, four gift bags, and five ribbons, I managed to not wrap any of my gifts exactly the same!

Hi, I'm Val. I spent most of my 20s in a standstill, unable to pick which path in life I wanted to take. I wanted the nomadic life of a traveler but also wanted the husband, the condo, and the kitten. Unable to decide which life I wanted more, I did nothing. When I turned 30 I’d had enough of putting my life on hold and decided to start “choosing my figs.” So, I quit my job, bought a one-way ticket to Europe, and traveled for three years. Now I'm back in Chicago, decorating my apartment in all the teal, petting my cats, and planning my next adventure.

i used to make a buche de noel for christmas every year for french class. every year it was our mission to come up with a better filling. we went from coffee to mint to vanilla to awesome vanilla which made it taste llike a swiss cake roll.
