An on and off life…

I went on a date last week. I’ll wait while you pick up your jaw from the floor. Better? OK. Moving on. So, I went on a date last week. We met on Tinder and he asked me out right away. So we met for dinner and drinks at a bar down the block from me.

And, in the course of conversation, I managed to say…

“I’ve been at my job on and off for ten years.”

“I was in Thailand on and off for maybe three or four months.”

“I don’t have Netflix right now. I get it every few months but then cancel it for a few months.”

It was at this point that my date laughed and said, “you really are just on and off with everything in your life, aren’t you?”

I kind of stared for a moment and let the words process.

I don’t think anyone has ever so succinctly described the way I live before.

Hi, I'm Val. I spent most of my 20s in a standstill, unable to pick which path in life I wanted to take. I wanted the nomadic life of a traveler but also wanted the husband, the condo, and the kitten. Unable to decide which life I wanted more, I did nothing. When I turned 30 I’d had enough of putting my life on hold and decided to start “choosing my figs.” So, I quit my job, bought a one-way ticket to Europe, and traveled for three years. Now I'm back in Chicago, decorating my apartment in all the teal, petting my cats, and planning my next adventure.

Accurate I suppose, but if it works for you, if it works for now, why not?

Also I love that this was the whole post. Hilarious in its brevity. (Um, did I just use the word brevity?)
